Here’s what we know

We have an amazing and urgent opportunity to welcome a family from Afghanistan to our

Grand Island community! The Missions Committee of GI Free needs your involvement with this.

Last year, several members of our church body created a sponsorship group to welcome a refugee family to Grand Island from Syria. That case is still in process, but since the US Refugee Admissions Program is currently suspended, we are "on hold" and waiting to see when there will be forward movement. Meanwhile, since we already had a group established, we were invited to welcome an additional family into our community, this one from Afghanistan, THIS WEEK! These newcomers have a special designation of “SIV” (Special Immigrant Visa) since they assisted the US military in Afghanistan, so they are still able to come even though the refugee program is suspended. The family consists of a husband and wife and 3 young kids. Because they assisted the US military, their lives are in danger under Taliban leadership, so it's especially critical for them to be able to resettle somewhere safe and permanent. Due to safety concerns, we are not able to share more detailed information about them at this time. This is such an amazing opportunity for us to be the hands and feet of Jesus in a very tangible way and extend welcome to a family that urgently needs it. They will be arriving late on Wednesday April 23rd and will have some temporary housing provided by Airbnb. We are very quickly looking for more permanent housing, as we assist them in starting up their new lives here. Since the turnaround time is so quick, we urgently need your help! If you have any housing leads, please be in touch!

Prayer

Please be praying for the family and for our team as we navigate their arrival and getting settled. They've had a tremendous amount of upheaval in their lives, and we hope to provide a safe space where they can thrive. Please pray for safe travels and that all the legal details of visas and documents could go smoothly.

Get Involved

If you would like to get involved, please sign up at the link below . This mailing list will be able to provide more details and info about specific needs as they arise; there will be an abundance and it will take a village to make this happen.

Give Financially

There is grant funding available for some of their resettlement costs, but our group is responsible for raising the rest, with the goal of $10,000. This is a time-critical request. This will provide for the family's housing, food, utilities, and other needs during their first 90 days here in the U.S. If you are interested, you can donate directly to resettlement costs at the link below, or by contacting Mike Leggott or Julie Gustafson directly.
